Didn't care so much for television, I think the only things I've missed out on are CBC content - news, documentaries and The Hour.

But this week was huge, not only did Glee come back to the air (I'm a gleek...but I'll save that for another post) but if I don't find someone with a tv - I'm gonna miss this all-star special on ABDC!

I've been waiting for this to happen since season 3 ended - then the show wasn't so good...not worth the time to look for generous people on certain sites to watch season 4 and 5.

Quest Crew and Jabbawockeez will be amazing to see how they stack up against each other on the abdc stage, but it's going to be a shame that stand-outs like Kaba Modern and Soreal Cru won't be there.

Lately, I've been watching a lot of Soreal and if you check out their youtube channel, I always felt like, 'Whoa! Why didn't I see THIS when they were on ABDC?'

I ain't no professional dancer or anything, but it's hard not to highlight the similarities between Soreal Cru and Kaba Modern. Both crews are really precise and detailed with their movements. But stylistically, there's a huge difference in their dancing. I think a lot of it can be attributed to where these two crews come from and the music that they use is evidence of that. Soreal Cru is from Houston and (not to generalize people from the South) but they've got more love for the slower, smoother hip-hop/r&b music. Those songs mixed with an array of heavy bass, 808 tick-tackin' hip-hop beats, the music they use represents where they come from a lot - and that's awesome. The dancing they produce is sexier without having to be raunchy or half-naked. It actually takes a lot of skill to keep up with the choreography they produce.

But other than looking at the group as a whole, check out some of the members on their own - particularly Andrew Baterina, Brian Puspos and Jackie Lautchang - search 'em up and you'll find a lot of choreographed pieces that they teach in workshops and whatnot.

Here are some of their choreographed pieces that I like (almost all the videos here are from their channel Soreal Cru TV):
Day one I've been uploading footage from tapes as they come in and once in a while patching daily footage from Queens Park to the station.
Nothing exciting, it's pretty relaxing and the studio is really an awesome site to see.
It's a huge open space with red pillars that look like T's.
HDTV's everywhere. In the actual newsroom where I'm at, I've counted like...10 of them, but there's still the Global News and ET control rooms too.

Anyways, TANGENT!
Here's how I feel.
HUMBLED!! I used to think I was pretty hot stuff, being all fancy with my NewsEdit expertise at Ryerson, but man these guys are using a crazy arsenal of different software and technologies just to get their news shows up and running.

Last night, about 30 minutes before Global Toronto went to air, I sat in with an editor and a reporter while they put together their package.
Wow! Reporter had a script ready, and recorded in about 2 minutes for a 1:30 minute piece.
Sub-clipped footage, knew exactly which shots to use, matching pictures to script, boom boom boom. They were done in like 20 minutes tops.

At school, putting together something like that would take me an hour at the least.
I shouldn't have expected anything less from them I guess cuz these are pros, they've been doing it for years now. It's like a machine, just going with the motions.

But yeah, for those who are reading this, I'll fill you guys in on more when I'm out and about. Next week I'm going out - on the field. I'll be with a camera guy and just helping them out I guess.

Brian out.Brian Hanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07210898962298992251noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7766044298085764194.post-63770580451345476882009-02-23T02:44:00.002-05:002009-02-23T03:01:56.525-05:00Tough LoveI love my parents for being so observant and critical.
But I hate it too because I realize how much of my life I need to change.

My dad visited this reading week and, generally, he had a good impression of me until this weekend when I crashed at a friends place downtown and didn't wake up to see him out.

I had a million missed calls from him because I was playing dodgeball at church and as soon as I got home I called my dad. Good one, Brian.

That's usually how a big intervention-like discussion starts. I mess up and then he tells me about all of the ways I'm not going to succeed in life...unless I change my lifestyle, of course.

Everything from school, church, my social life, EVERYTHING! Both of my parents usually try to give me space to live out my life until they see me mess up waaay too many times to not say anything.

I know I sound like I'm complaining but it's good for me when they come down on me like that. I don't have too many people who rebuke me or call me out on the stupid stuff I do. But all this time, I thought I was doing pretty well for myself in the growing-up part of my life. I'm making better money, I have good friends, and I'm getting by with school.

But I should be doing more with my time. As my dad was saying, I should be doing more full time things and less part time things. Full time meaning, getting my priorities straight, getting my school stuff together and just focusing on that. Everything else coming second.
I'm still not sure how to feel about that but I know for sure, I could be doing more. And I should be.

Why do I always feel like I'm 16 years old? Why can't I just be 21 and feel like I'm 21?

Back to my essay.
Gnite.Brian Hanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07210898962298992251noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7766044298085764194.post-76595173489183427482009-02-11T00:41:00.004-05:002009-02-11T00:50:19.534-05:00In need of a shoe rack...
It doesn't look like a lot, but my place isn't big enough for all of these shoes.
I can't open my door properly unless I put em away in to that little rack.
The top shelf is for my essentials - running shoes, dress shoes and timbs for those snowy days in canadia. The rest is all just for looks. It needs to stop.
It would be really ideal if there was just one more shelf that I could stack there on top. But I think i'll have to settle on getting a new shoe rack all together - a really tall shoe rack.

Anyone have any suggestions? (Read the following in a charming sutherin' acksent)

Churches:
It's friggin' weird to see a church get supersized.

Driving through the outskirts of Houston and San Antonio, I saw maybe three or four big ones. I wish I had my camera to show you guys some photos cuz it was ridonkulous sizes.

Do you guys know how big Earl Haig high is? There are churches here in Texas that are like four times bigger than that school. Like, one of these texas-sized buildings could easily be the new mega wal-mart coming to your small town. I don't think Ryerson University is as big as one of these mega churches (exaggerating, but that's how I feel).

Coffees:
I love the oversized coffee drinks here.
McDonalds doesn't offer any coffees in a small size.
There's only one way to drink that iced coffee and that's in a large plastic cup, half ice, half creme, five pumps of vanilla sirrup and some coffee! That's a dollar seventy somethin'!

Clouds:
For some reason or whatnot, the clouds are really really big.
They make everything on thr ground seem pretty miniscule.
When there's a nice white puffy cloud in the sky, it'd be a normal thing to see God standing on one of 'em with a big smile on his face. Waving at ya with a big pitcher of sweet tea!
But come across a big monstrous grey cloud, it look it'll shoot a bolt of lightning out itself into your face! It's a scary thing.

More big things to come as I see em folks...Brian Hanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07210898962298992251noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7766044298085764194.post-31544212856207295162008-12-18T21:35:00.002-05:002008-12-18T21:38:57.455-05:00My Mom > most MomsDisclaimer:
i refer to ">" as a symbol for "cooler than"
Why didn't I just write my mom is cooler than most moms?
because she's that cool.

Here's why:
My mom now has official training from the FBI on what to do in an event of a bioterrorist incident in America.

And the other day, she had to go investigate an escaped monkey spreading some weird jungle sickness in her jurisdiction of Houston.

Wow mom!

More updates on my Houston trip to come.Brian Hanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07210898962298992251noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7766044298085764194.post-91870667954353525812008-12-05T07:38:00.003-05:002008-12-05T07:44:52.719-05:00Another all-nighter...It isn't surprising that this is my third night staying up past 5 AM.

It really isn't. But who's reading them? When you're talking about, say, the online zine for blind stoner-rocker kids, they can't really compare with the kind of readership the Toronto Star gets.

The good thing about a big paper like the Toronto Star (or even a free publication like Metro), everyday people read them daily with an expectation to read about certain stories and opinions that have mass appeal - but even with the large readership, the content with supposed mass appeal won't always appeal to the masses.

That's why self publishing can be so great, it creates opportunities for small niche groups to speak out, publish and talk about the content that appeals to them. But when those niche groups are trying to bring new information out in the open, the kind of information that needs to be heard by the public just doesn't always make it to mainstream - protests, crimes against humanity, scandals - bringing awareness to things like that don't always capture the attention of anyone except for the small population of readers who dsicover these independent publications.

I guess that brings me to my point:

there should be more emphasis on mainstreaming independent, self published content on the internet.

Some of the information they know has got to mean something to mainstream ears. I'm one of the dependents who only get their info from the mainstream so I wouldn't really know what I might need to know - but I know it's out there...hahaha.

It's frustrating sometimes. It's not easy going beyond the Google search engine and digging through the internet for legitimate sources that I can learn more from. Self-publishers need to figure out how to bring what they have out into the open for easier accessibilty.

In addition to that, there needs to be more work done in "selling" new information and ideas to the public, to help stir more interest in something they may not have been interested in before.

Global Warming is a good example of stirring interest in a new idea. An Inconvienent Truth. Al Gore and his presentation on the toll that climate change is having on our world brought the issue into the mainstream. Now, it's commonplace to be concerned about "how to go green" and what normal people can do to make a difference.

There's so much room for independent self-published zines to grow and spread out beyond their own niche audiences. It's just the matter of how; there are solutions out there - whether it be striking deals with big companies like Rogers, advertisement affiliations, etc.

Sure, the internet is littered with these little niche sites but just knowing that they exist won't always be good enough.Brian Hanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07210898962298992251noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7766044298085764194.post-35835382855361672022008-03-06T13:38:00.002-05:002008-03-06T13:55:59.105-05:00Who can make the best Ramyun (instant noodles)?

If you think you cook you're ramyun the best or have the most creative recipes for ramyun, then let me know.

I'm writing a "How-To" article for my class at ryerson journalism about how students can make new, delicious and creative meals with their ramyun and I'm looking for some students or former students who can share some of their cooking secrets with me.

Comment or msg me on facebook.

Or feel free to add me on msn if you dont already have my contacts:

hoit182@hotmail.com

Brian Hanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07210898962298992251noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7766044298085764194.post-45349522471800223812008-02-28T12:17:00.002-05:002008-02-28T12:50:31.084-05:00JRN 112 blog #2 - When my dad Googled meYeah, he Googled me - typed 'Brian Han' in the search engine and found some pretty embarassing videos of me dancing in my room and at a mall.

He called me from his home in Texas and asked, "Why are you dancing?"
Not even a 'hello' or 'how are you doing' and it was awkward.

So I said, "Uhhh...what?"
"I typed your name on the internet and now I'm watching you dance in your room and..."
"On youtube?"
"Went to google first and...why are you dancing in your room?"
"Why are you using my name in search engin.."
"You should be studying, Brian."

Yadda yadda yadda.

You get the gist of it.
I should've known sooner or later my dad would use technology against me someday. In the back of my mind, it's nice to imagine capturing moments on camera for the world to see - get published in a magazine that everyone knows about. Time, Walrus and that sort of thing. But it's just not practical. A student like me has to eat and pay the tutition fees - I got to get by on what I have.

But, it's almost encouraging to see how much of an impact someone can do with a cheap little camera phone. I think that's one part about citizen journalism that I love - the fact that news networks like CNN will use shaky, blurry and pixelated images taken from an amateur with a camera phone.

The person who whipped out their camera phone and recorded this university student getting tasered at this Kerry event became a newsmaker - they were there and that's what's exciting. Playing a role in getting reporting the news first didn't mean having the best equipment, the best technique or the most journalistic integrity and reporting skills. In these situations, being where the story happens is the least it takes to be a newsmaker.

I'm not saying that having the luck of being there and a camera phone ready trumps the abilities and integrity of a real journalist or photographer. Harass me and keep me accountable for getting my license.Brian Hanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07210898962298992251noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7766044298085764194.post-897049275969190632008-01-28T13:08:00.000-05:002008-01-28T13:10:24.277-05:00Talking with a Chinese waitress...Djang: Hey let's take a picture - get the waitress to take it for us.

Bhan: Okay - excuse me miss. He's a lot of fun to listen to. Chances are, if you're like me, you've never heard this kind of message being spoken.

Thanks again, Edgar.
These are streaming audio of his sermon series:

Marriage in the Beginning (Part 1)

He Must Be (Part 2)

She Must Be (Part 3)

Facebookers:
I kinda screwed up the links for part 2 and maybe 3.
So if it ain't working, go to the original post and click on the links there.Brian Hanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07210898962298992251noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7766044298085764194.post-6493798055771407252007-12-19T02:26:00.000-05:002007-12-19T02:40:37.723-05:00Next best thing?Probably Daniel Tosh.
I'm glad he's improved so much in his stand-up lol, he's probably the funniest guy I've seen so far.
I highly recommend you watch his special: "completely serious."

Daniel Tosh: Completely Serious
- Part One
- Part Two
- Part Three
- Part Four
- Part Five

So keeping with the theme of 'next best thing',
I'm not sure what else I can say...awkward...Brian Hanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07210898962298992251noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7766044298085764194.post-29738350291645279862007-12-18T02:22:00.000-05:002007-12-18T03:42:54.028-05:00on the fence
Currently Listening to:
Dashboard Confessional - The Shade Of Poison Trees

While currently reading:
I Kissed Dating Goodbye - Joshua Harris

So I finished part one and I would say I have to agree with what he's saying.
I should probably read everything over again once I'm done the book just because there's a lot to soak up.
I think I began reading this book with the wrong kind of expectations. As embarrassing as this sounds, I thought I was going to get some answers as to how I can improve my own love life - it's hardly the case. As weird as this sounds, this book is beginning to convince me to stop trying to date...we'll see what I think after I'm done.

So far, here's a few basic notes I got from what I've read so far (in no particular order):

Single life is a gift - use it.
To grow, to mature, to learn, to serve, to do what God wants you to do now.

Don't date (unless you wanna tie the knot)
One-on-one time with the opposite sex doesn't always lead to something better in the long run. You'll get too comfortable with getting all the intimacy, physical and emotional satisfaction without any of the commitment...there's a lot more to it...but that's the gist.

Seek God's Kingdom First
the rest will fall into place when the time's right.

Potential Girlfriends no more.
Sisters-In-Christ goggles from now on.

Brian Hanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07210898962298992251noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7766044298085764194.post-51675166037509762012007-12-11T02:26:00.000-05:002007-12-11T03:14:45.866-05:00numero unoHello Internet.
My name is BriHan.

I guess you're here because you want to read what I have to say, know what I do, learn about my life (you stalker ^^)
Well this is my invitation to you.
But I don't start my premiere entries with a bang - that's not how BriHan rolls.

Instead
LOOK DOWN BELOW!!
I'm eating THAT right now...
instant jajangmyun
I'm not sure what's wrong with Canada but apparently it isn't the norm to put Sriracha hot chili sauce in the jajang

Well do it!
